Staying on Track This Festive Season: Progress over Perfection

The festive season is a time for celebrations, family catch-ups, holidays, and making memories. It’s also a time when many of our usual routines are challenged. The good news? Staying healthy over December doesn’t have to mean saying no to every social event.

Instead try to focus on balance. We can enjoy the moments that matter, while maintaining a few simple habits that will help us feel our best, heading into the new year.

Mindset shifts:

  • Let go of the “I’ll start again next year” mentality. Consider keeping small habits that you can maintain. It will feel more achievable and contribute to your overall well-being.
  • Remember: Healthy lifestyle is not ‘an all-or-nothing’ approach.
  • What fitness routines, group fitness classes or workouts can you commit to over this period? Make them your ‘faves’ so you’ll be more likely to keep them up.

Enjoy the Celebrations minus the guilt:

  • Say yes to the Christmas party, family barbecue, or festive lunch.
  • Enjoy your favourite foods and traditions, but focus on the social connection rather than the food while you’re there.
  • Avoid the cycle of overindulging followed by trying to “make up for it.”

Keep Moving in Ways That Feel Good

Consistency matters more than intensity…

Consider:

  • A shorter gym session instead of skipping entirely.
  • A morning walk before holiday commitments.
  • ‘Active’ activities with the kids – swimming, cycling, hiking, or playing outdoors.
  • Focusing on movement that boosts your energy rather than feeling like a chore.

Fun Fact: Even 20-30 minutes of movement can help maintain fitness, reduce stress, and improve your mood.

Focus on the Habits That Matter Most

Try and anchor yourself to a few key habits for the season:

  • Stay active most days.
  • Drink plenty of water.
  • Sleep is still important, how can you prioritise quality.
  • Include protein with every meal
  • Take opportunities to move throughout the day.
  • Give yourself flexibility without abandoning your goals.

Small habits repeated consistently often have a greater impact than extreme efforts that only last a week or two.

Make Time to Reflect

Before rushing into New Year’s resolutions, take a moment to look back on the year that’s been.

Ask yourself:

  • What am I most proud of this year?
  • What healthy habits served me well?
  • What challenges did I overcome?
  • When did I feel my happiest, strongest, or most energised?
  • What do I want more of in the year ahead?
  • What am I ready to leave behind?

Reflection helps us recognise progress rather than focusing solely on what still needs improvement.

Rethink New Year’s Resolutions

Instead of setting a huge goal for January 1st, consider building on what’s already working.

Rather than:

  • “I’m going to exercise every day.”

Try:

  • “I’m going to move my body at least three times a week.”

Rather than:

  • “I’m cutting out all treats.”

Try:

  • “I’m focusing on balance and making nourishing choices most of the time.”

Sustainable goals are more likely to become lasting habits. Keep yourself accountable whilst being flexible with life. Think more along the lines of “if I miss a workout, that’s ok… just don’t miss two in a row”.

Give Yourself Permission to Be Human

The festive season is about connection, joy, and creating memories. Fitness and wellbeing should support those experiences, not take away from them.

If you miss a workout, enjoy an extra dessert, or have a few late nights, don’t let one decision become a reason to give up altogether.

Every day is an opportunity to get back into a routine, make a healthy choice, or do something that supports your wellbeing – we guarantee you’ll feel better for it!

Heading Into the New Year

This December, aim to finish the year feeling good, not exhausted from trying to keep it all together.

Celebrate. Connect. Move your body. Reflect on how far you’ve come.

Most importantly, remember that staying on track isn’t about doing everything right. It’s about doing enough of the right things, often enough, to keep moving forward.

This festive season, focus on balance over perfection and progress over pressure, and live a little in the moment!
